Flood Project Mitigation
- $2.2 million saved
In 1997, floods caused serious damage in the Sacramento Valley. The U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers (Corps) and the California Department of Water Resources
(DWR) worked for years to repair damage to flood-control systems. Much of
this infrastructure work caused impacts to giant garter snake habitat and
various wetland and riparian habitats.
Wildlands designated part of its Pope Ranch property to provide turnkey mitigation for the impacts. A staff report for the DWR subsequently reported the cost saving the agencies gained, in comparison to mitigation that could have been developed directly by the agencies themselves. Estimated savings exceeded $620,000 for the State of California and $1,590,000 for the federal government.
